Special Education Schools provide special education for students with special educational needs (MBPK) at all schooling levels. These schools are directly managed by the Special Education Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE).

Special Education Secondary School Category

Special Education Secondary Schools are divided into several types, depending on the category of students:

National Special Education Secondary School (SMKPK)

Schools fully dedicated to MBPK excelling in academics.
Equipped with special facilities such as teaching aids, speech therapy, special education resource rooms, and trained teachers.

Special Education Vocational Secondary Schools (SMPKV)

Offer skills-based education to help MBPK build careers after school.
Courses include Sewing Technology, Food Preparation, and Mechanics.

Special Education Programs in Controlled Secondary Schools (MOE)

Special Education Integration Program (PPKI):

MBPK are placed in PPKI classes in regular secondary schools.

They follow a special program but can still join activities with other students.

Inclusive Education Program (PPI):

MBPK attend mainstream classes together with other students in government or government-aided schools.

National Curriculum

- For students who can follow the national curriculum with modifications or additional support.

Skills Curriculum

Used in SMPKV, focusing on vocational training for MBPK.
Students may obtain the Malaysian Vocational Certificate (SVM) and Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM), allowing them to enter the workforce or continue at skills colleges.

Admission Requirements:

Students identified as MBPK with OKU cards, verified by medical practitioners/ special education specialists
The Special Education Division (BPKhas)/ State Education Departments (JPN)/ SMPKV will assess students’ needs before deciding placement in SMPK or PPKI
